Tough one! Really tough one....

But I'd probably get the GT3.

Also the price points are going to be very different.

Think the M2 is going to be like $75-80k. The GT3 will be more, but not much more; no way this things going to approach 911 Turbo monies.

You think the M2 is going to be $10k more than an M3? I think you're wrong.

I predict the M2 will be in the 50-55k range. GT3 will start at 100k

Kinja'd!!!1

Hmm...well thats a serious problem for the GT3 which is rumored to be approaching $90k and a bit beyond. Can they ask that kind of money for a not-911 facing significantly cheaper competition?

Completely different price brackets.

...and completely similar offerings; compact german sports cars in the ~400 HP performance bracket. So which one would you take?

Kinja'd!!! Brian Silvestro > PS9
05/14/2014 at 22:50

Kinja'd!!!1

I really don't know where to place the GT3 in terms of performance. I think it's going to fight above it's weight class (against 911s and F-Types) and probably perform better than them thanks to mid-engine and some power.

Never underestimate the lunacy of Porsche pricing models!

I don't think Porsche would let the car exist if it could seriously challenge the 911. It will come close though, and it's kind of a miracle that they're letting this happen at all.

2 M2's or 1 M2 and one Corvette Stingray.

Cayman. If I'm buying a sports car and am limited to two options, it will be the least practical of the two.

Two completely different cars. M2 is classic RWD and Cayman is A-Rod on Roids. I want the M2 cause it has more "integrity" and because I rather have a 911 than a cayman, especially at 100k. GT3 looks ridiculous.

Here is my prediction (and hope). I think Porsche is going to push the envelope farther than they have in decades with this new Cayman. They won't risk making it competitive with the 991 GT3. But I think they will take the gloves off a bit and make it a better track weapon than a lightly optioned C2S.

They'll feel OK with doing this because they're going to make the new Cayman expensive as fuck. So it won't cannibalize a lightly optioned C2S from a profit perspective as it will be more expensive. And it won't ruin the 911's brand as the Cayman GT4 will appeal to different buyers. It won't be luxurious and may not be very comfy to drive. And I highly doubt that the buyers with enough money to purchase the 991 GT3 will buy the Cayman GT4 instead. Unless of course they are so sick of having to wait for the 991 GT3 (due to the stupid low allocation numbers) that they aren't going to wait anymore. In that case better to sell them another Porsche than let them get a Corvette.

Kinja'd!!!1

My opinion is that the Cayman GT4 will be the better car, but the M2 will be the better value. It's must the same as comparing the 911 to the M3. The M3 is always the better value. But sometimes the 911 is the better car. And by better I mean dynamics, not practicality. The BMWs are always more practical.

Kinja'd!!! Brian Silvestro > Manuél Ferrari
05/14/2014 at 22:59

Kinja'd!!!1

Agreed 100%. I also feel like they're obligated to make a mid-engined high performance car that isn't the 918, and a super-Cayman fits the bill perfectly.

Kinja'd!!! Manuél Ferrari > Brian Silvestro
05/14/2014 at 23:02

Kinja'd!!!0

BTW by GT3 I meant the 991 GT3. I've seen the new Cayman referred to as the GT4.

They are obligated to make an even better Cayman R as a stopgap measure until the REAL mid-engine car is ready.

You've read about the real sub-918 car, right? That will be the car you pine for in the future for sure.

I think it's all about which 911 it challenges.

I think they'll be fine with it challenging any 911 that is cheaper than it.

Kinja'd!!! Manuél Ferrari > Brian Silvestro
05/14/2014 at 23:05

Kinja'd!!!0

That's what I was thinking too.

But I have this qualification: it will be faster around tracks than a lightly optioned C2S. A $150K C2S with all the performance options will be faster.

Kinja'd!!! Brian Silvestro > Manuél Ferrari
05/14/2014 at 23:07

Nope. Faster than any S, 4 or otherwise. I'm talking 911 GTS levels of performance.

Kinja'd!!!0

Hahah You might me right! or like my father told me: "Son, before you die, remember to have eaten a crapload. Because imagine living all of your afterlife feeling hungry. THAT would be tragic."

Kinja'd!!! Manuél Ferrari > Brian Silvestro
05/14/2014 at 23:17

Kinja'd!!!0

But remember a 911 C2S or C4S can be optioned up to a level that makes it moar expensive than a GTS!

The GTS is actually a "value pack". Porsche throws in a lot of the options that you want for less than you'd pay if you picked all those options yourself.

Kinja'd!!! Brian Silvestro > Manuél Ferrari
05/14/2014 at 23:19

I'll put it this way:

Slower than a GT3, but not by much.

Kinja'd!!! Manuél Ferrari > Brian Silvestro
05/14/2014 at 23:20

Kinja'd!!!0

How have you not heard of this? You're Brian S, knower of all things.

No new news in a while. But I don't think it's because it won't happen. I just think it's cause the 918 took longer than planned to finish and the Macan took longer than they wanted too.

http://wot.motortrend.com/we-hear-new-su…

The CEO admitted that he wants to do it, he just isn't setting it as a priority right now. It's not going to be volume seller so they're focusing on SUVs and more hybrid tech for regular models.

So cool!

I imagine it being something like a 918 without all the heavy hybrid/AWD stuff. That would be AWESOME.

Kinja'd!!! Manuél Ferrari > Brian Silvestro
05/14/2014 at 23:22

Kinja'd!!!0

Hmm

I don't think they'll risk making it just a tad slower than the 991 GT3. That's too risky because profits. And Porsche LOVES profit even more than other car companies do.

Kinja'd!!! Manuél Ferrari > Brian Silvestro

Kinja'd!!!0

That's what everyone wants. But they've downplayed that rumor in other chats with auto journalists. But that could just be a smoke screen. They want to keep everyone guessing.

I dunno how long it will take them to get this car done. But I really think they will make it eventually. I read somewhere else that it bothers them that they don't have a true competitor to the 458.

Kinja'd!!! Manuél Ferrari > Brian Silvestro
05/14/2014 at 23:26

Kinja'd!!!1

Profit is like heroin to other car companies.

Profit is like crack with PCP sprinkled on it to Porsche.

What else explains them trying to buy VW using a leveraged buyout, lol

Kinja'd!!! Brian Silvestro > Manuél Ferrari
05/14/2014 at 23:26

Kinja'd!!!1

I'm sure they're angry that they don't get any part of that Huracan/R8/650S/458 segment money. They'll change that eventually with the way they're expanding.

Kinja'd!!! Manuél Ferrari > Brian Silvestro
05/14/2014 at 23:33

Kinja'd!!!0

Exactly! They're owned by VAG now and both Audi and Lambo have moar exotic options than them.

It doesn't matter how fast a 991 GT3 is around the track. Some buyers will still want an R8 V10 or Huracan more.

If they just took the damn 918 chassis and removed AWD and the hybrid system we would all be happy. That N/A V8 is a work of art. And it wouldn't hurt 918 sales since the 918 is a limited edition and crazy expensive.

Kinja'd!!! Brian Silvestro > Manuél Ferrari
05/14/2014 at 23:38

Kinja'd!!!1

Ugh I'd just love to see how that V8 performs on it's own. Drop it in a 911 if you have to! I want to see it used in other applications. It should be put in the Cayenne/Panamera GTS. Whatever happened to companies putting their supercar engines into SUVS to move them along quickly? It was awesome! Examples:

Oh easily! If they can get all that hybrid stuff in a mid engined supercar, I'm sure they could get it in the Macan. Sadly, it's probably never going to happen.
